Just Your Average Fangirl

Since once in a blue moon I actually discover a decent rule for adulting, and since I know I have followers a few years younger than me who are just entering the workforce, I want to tell you about a very important phrase.

“I won’t be available.”

Imagine you’re at work and your boss asks you to come in on Saturday. Saturday is usually your day off–coming in Saturdays is not an obligation to keep your job. Maybe you were going to watch a movie with a friend, or maybe you were just going to lie in bed and eat ice cream for eight hours, but either way you really, really don’t want to give up your day off.

If you consider yourself a millennial you’ve probably been raised to believe you need to justify not being constantly at work. And if you’re a gen-Z kid you’re likely getting the same toxic messages that we did. So in a situation like that, you might be inclined to do one of three things:

  1. Tell your boss you’d rather not give up your day off. Cave when they pressure you to come in anyway, since you’re not doing anything important.
  2. Tell your boss you’d rather not give up your day off. Over-apologize and worry that you looked bad/unprofessional.
  3. Lie and say you’ve got a doctor’s appointment or some other activity that feels like an adequate justification for not working.

The fact is, it doesn’t matter to your boss whether you’re having open heart surgery or watching anime in your underwear on Saturday. The only thing that affects them is the fact that you won’t be at work. So telling them why you won’t be at work only gives them reason to try and pressure you to come in anyway.

If you say “I won’t be available,” giving no further information, you’d be surprised how often that’s enough. Be polite and sympathetic in your tone, maybe even say “sorry, but I won’t be available.” But don’t make an excuse. If your boss is a professional individual, they’ll accept that as a ‘no’ and try to find someone else.

But bosses aren’t always professional. Sometimes they’re whiny little tyrants. So, what if they pressure you further? The answer is–politely and sympathetically give them no further information.

“Are you sure you’re not available?” “Sorry, but yes.”

“Why won’t you be available?” “I have a prior commitment.” (Which you do, even if it’s only to yourself.)

“What’s your prior commitment?” “Sorry, but that’s kind of personal.”

“Can you reschedule it?” “I’m afraid not. Maybe someone else can come in?”

If you don’t give them anything to work with, they can’t pressure you into going beyond your obligations as an employee. And when they realize that, they’ll also realize they have to find someone else to come in and move on.

IMPORTANT!! PLEASE READ!!

Just like with many other parts of life, learn to say ‘no’ to people. You are important. Don’t kill yourself for another person, esp. if they are your boss.

But how do I say I’m not available to a family member asking me to go to a place I really don’t want to go?

They would consider it to be way too evasive if I say it’s for a “personal reason”, since they’re part of my personal life. So I always come up lies or excuses as to why I can’t go, and feel really guilty about it

One time, Gryffindor reached exactly 69 house points, and for two whole weeks they managed not to gain or lose any by being as boring as possible. It was finally broken when Hermione was awarded 10 points for some good Charms homework, and Ron was subtracted 20 for yelling “FUCKS SAKE HERMIONE” in response

Hello Friends!!!

I know it’s been awhile but I am back with another book review for you. My Internship has kept me extremely busy. So much so that finding time to read has been much harder than I would like it to be. But when I was contacted by Suzanna J. Linton, the author of this book and her team about doing a review for her latest book I could not resist. Linton has been so supportive then entire time, and I can really tell how much she cares for her readers and her work. I want to say a huge thank you to her and her team for providing me with eARC’s of the books and for allowing me to have this wonderful opportunity!

As you all know well by now I don’t like spoilers at all, so this will be as spoiler free as humanly possible.

First off, I really enjoyed the cover art on the books. You all know I’m a sucker for a beautiful book cover, and these definitely didn’t dissapoint. It was also the synopsis that originally drew my interest. I have found that more recently if I am not drawn in by the synopsis I most likely won’t find the book to be that good for me. While this isn’t true for all books I have begun to trust this feeling more and more. That is why I knew I would enjoy this book. I will leave the synopsis below so you all can enjoy it for yourselves.

Synopsis:

Jarrett failed everyone close to him.

In disgrace, he resigned his position as Captain of the Royal Guard and entered self-imposed exile in Lorst’s Eastern Forests. As a common soldier, he fought the remainder of the sorcerer Marduk’s monsters.

However, after an assassination attempt leaves her bedridden, Clara summons Jarrett back to the capital city of Bertrand. Over his protests, she appoints him Captain of the Seer’s Guard. Though both her parents and her ability to see the future are restored to her, neither of these things can help her find her would-be killer. There’s also a greater threat on the horizon she must face and she needs someone she can trust.

Jarrett searches for both Clara’s enemies and his sense of honor. However, his investigations threaten to expose secrets that could ruin them all and shake the Lorst to the core.

The electrifying third novel of The Stories of Lorst Series takes the reader from the immaculate halls of the Palace to the dingy streets of the Low Quarters on an epic tale of secrets, betrayals, and lost love.

Characters:

There were quite a few characters in this book which I really enjoyed. Often books will only focus on a few main characters and let the rest fall by the way side. This was not the case in Secret Burdens. The characters were well rounded, and I had a great time getting to know each of them as the story progressed. Clara as a main character was so interesting to me. I really liked the suspense that the story held surronding her and everything that she went through. I also really liked Jarrett. He constantly had me wondering what he would do next and how his storyline would progress. I think I  may go so far as to say he was one of my favorite characters.

Plot:

The plot was a lot of fun. I really enjoyed how it kept me guessing throughout the whole book. I remember wanting a reading partner to bounce things off of because I was just so floored by the twists and turns, and of course I didn’t so I was left in awe by myself. So I am very excited to see what you guys think if you’ve read it, or if you are planning on reading it. I would absolutely love to know what you all have to say abou these books. I’m hoping you guys will give these a chance so we can all discuss what we thought about them!

Overall:

As a whole I did enjoy these books. The only issue I had was a minor one, and it was with the timing. The timing in Secret Burdens was a bit jumpy. What I mean by this is that there were some parts that went really fast that I felt could have been slowed down, and more details added. Then there were other parts that I felt were a bit too drawn out. Other than that minor pacing issue, I had a great time reading and enjoying these books. Linton has a great descriptive writing style, and I thought it really added another dimension to the story as I was reading.

The first two books, Clara and Clara’s Return are out now and Secret Burdens is out today!

If I were to rate this book I’d give it a 3.75/5 stars 🙂

Author Bio:

Suzanna J. Linton grew up in rural South Carolina (really rural) and survived on her mother’s library, local ghost stories, and the tall tales her father spun for his children’s amusement. Books were her friends and they nurtured her imagination until Suzanna began telling stories of her own. After reading Anne McCaffrey’s Dragonriders of Pern series, she resolved to become an author.

During high school, she attended a summer program at the Governor’s School for the Arts and Humanities. She learned good writing techniques from local authors and poets. She went on to attend Francis Marion University and majored in Professional Writing. She thought for a time that she would try to be a technical writer but quickly learned the occupation wasn’t for her. After hopping from job to job, she landed at a local library, where she met the man that became her husband.

After the release of her first novel, Clara, Suzanna began writing adult/new adult fantasy and urban fantasy full time. She continues to live in South Carolina with her husband, their cat, and two dogs.

I hope you all have enjoyed this review, and check out these books for yourselves!
